THE MILLENNIUM TROPHY

INTRODUCTION

The Millennium Trophy Competition, sponsored by Leeds United and organised by the Leeds & District FA, was launched in the 1999-2000 season, following meetings between Mr. Peter Linsell, Youth Secretary of the Leeds FA, and Mr Alan Hill, Director of the Leeds United Academy.

This was to be a new competition for the under 13 teams in Leeds and in the West Riding area.

The Millennium Trophy

Fifty Two teams entered the knock-out competition in its inaugural year.   It was arranged that the Semi-Finals would be played at the Leeds Utd academy ground at Thorp Arch in April 2000, with the Final taking place the following month at Leeds United's ground at Elland Road.

The Semi-Finals attracted some 500 spectators to Thorp Arch in April, while a crowd of twice that number turned out to support Colton Juniors and Farsley Celtic Colts who competed in the Final at Elland Road in May.

The two teams played out an excellent match with Colton Juniors emerging as the first winners of the splendid Leeds Utd Millennium Trophy while, thanks to Leeds Utd, all the boys participating in the competition were presented with a memento to treasure

With the support of League Secretaries and the efforts of Messrs Brian Kidd, John Seasman, Gary Worthington and Ian Sylvester of Leeds Utd academy, together with Mr. Peter Linsell of Leeds Utd FA, the Millennium Trophy is now set to run for many seasons to come, giving countless young footballers the chance to play in an exciting competition and to compete for a truly prestigious prize.
